I am From

Maria Smith

I am from trading those colorful silly bands, breaking my thumb rip-sticking but back at it again the next week

in the driveway until sunset, from chasing bubbles with my dog- man I miss him

From jamming out with my hot pink iPod nano while starring at its little screen playing that little maze game &

that one level I could never beat

I am from watching my dad pop in the VHS and cuddling up for family movie night

And those special nights racing down the Blockbuster aisles, hunting down the perfect movie

I am from the world of Poptropica whose universes we would all travel to every computer class

I am from “Don’t you worry child” and “if only you knew what the future holds… cause baby you’re a firework!”

And from a time when I was told “no more screen time”... “can I just have 15 more minutes”

I am from the time I got my first iPad and the beginning of the descent into the void called technology

And from that crazy game that caused a stir… What was it called..oh yea... Flappy Bird

I am from going from an iPad to an iPhone. …to who knows what’s next

I am from do if for the vine..I ain’t gonna do it

And from the questionable craze of mustaches and neon clothes, but we didn’t care what the world thought

I am from and still from the relentless hurricanes and natural disasters & when people believed the world would end on December 21, 2012 & and maybe it did

From these little things called iPhones– so much power they hold

And from the immersive world of VR, the places it can take us… far far away

I am from the new age of AI, but what will become of us–will it take over the world? Only time will tell

I am from these moments

From running carelessly  and playing outside without a care in the world, where colors were brighter

To now,

where there are big screens everywhere, and life seems more hectic than before. Or maybe I just grew up

To now,

where I just want a fresh breath of air and for time to be still

And to the future unknown where a child’s dream of a future– flying cars and where robots may take over the world– just might happen… eventually
