ARK: Survival Evolved

MOBLIE VERSION

A game of kill or be killed. What will you do to survive? How will you survive? Only time will tell.

A game where you have to survive but can also tame the wild creatures of the world to become the top predator. Create alliances with other players or play single player mode to rule your won world.

  • Story Analysis: What storyline drives this game? â€‹

    • Although the story plot is not very clear, I believe you can slowly piece together the meaning of the world through explorer notes and some side quests. ARK resembles the idea of Noah's ark and the players aren't really people but clones of humans. You can find beacon structures that are different types of ARKs that were used to escape Earth and have returned. They are all connected through a server room that can be found somewhere throughout the world. These prism ARKs have high technology that can bring creatures back to life if the creatures' implanted chip is brought them with the correct amount of ambers. Your character also has a chip prism implant as well that would support the clone idea. â€‹â€‹

    • Your character is spawned somewhere on the gameplay map where you choose or are randomly spawned. Each section of the map is ranked from easiest to hardest. Your character's main objection is to build, hunt, tame creatures, and most importantly survive. Your character will do anything to stay alive. In many regards, it is the rule of kill or be killed. If you are in multiplayer mode, there is an extra amount of danger. You have to watch your back for hostile creatures as well as other players. You can kill, loot, and destroy anything the other players create, but the same goes for them even if you aren't logged in. Even with all those threats, you have to watch out for your health, food, thirst, and baggage levels. If they run out, you die.

  • Functional Analysis:

    •  What are the rules of the game?

      • There are no clear game rules except for survival. The only clear one is your player's level affects what you can craft and your other levels of power (baggage, attack, stamina, etc.).

    •  What buttons control character movement/gameplay?

      • It's pretty easy to learn. You use your right thumb to move the direction your player goes/sees and your left to move forward. Double left click will increase your speed. There are other icons you can push such as your backpack to see what you are holding or to craft items. There is a quick bar you can access by holding on the right side on another icon. The actions can be customized for better player experience.

    • - What are the levels / chapters of the game?

      • The levels are your own characters. You can level up by killing, taming, collecting, and completing quests. You aren't reset back to level 1 when you die. You just lose all your stuff. Once dead, you are brought back to the main map. There are 2 possible choices, random spawn or choose a general landing spot but your available options are based on the amount of time that passed since you were last killed. Sometimes, you are given the option to respawn with the beacon. The beacon will help show you where you were killed so you can retrieve your items from your corpse. But again, you only have a certain amount of time to find your lost back before it disappears.

      • How do the adversaries / villains move or attack?

        • Depends on what attacks you. Some creatures are very dangerous and if they spot you will immediately try to kill you. A dangerous creature icon will pop up when you are in a certain proximity to them. Others aren't as dangerous but still will attack on-site. Then there are some that are only hostile if you steal their eggs or hit them. It all depends on how they move to attack because it just depends on the species. When it comes to other players, it's a guessing game of who is your friend or foe. They can come at you with any weapon of their choice– the higher-up levels have better weapons. Also if you are offline in multiplayer mode, your character will be unconscious or sleeping on the ground wherever you last were. So, it's best you build a fortress house or just hide somewhere hopefully same from players and creates. Not the most fun experience to come back and you've died while you were away.

      • - How do players progress / advance in the game (complete a level, achieve a certain score, defeat the adversary/villain)?

        • How player progress is through their own level ups which is completed by killing, taming, collecting
          , and completing quests.

          - What changes to game control might make gameplay more efficient?

          • Game control is customizable but the size of your device (iPhone/tablet) may have an effect on your gaming experience.

  • Engagement Analysis:

    • What makes this game engaging?

      • The constant state of survival keeps the player glued to the game. If you die, there is a chance you won't get back to your dead body and to where your items were dropped in time before it disappears.

    • What aspects of gameplay did you enjoy the most?

      • When playing multiplayer mode, I like stealing people's stuff (even if their character is sleeping due to the player being offline.) Or the wandering around and building a house.

    • What aspects of gameplay were least enjoyable?

      • The whole everything is trying to kill you– even though that is the whole point of the game. Sometimes it's a lot and I just want to wander around with no worries.

    •  What changes would make this game even more engaging?

      • I would make the story/lore more obvious and intertwined into the game even if it's just in single-player mode.
